When Israel left Egypt, an erev rav went up with them (Exodus 12:38). The root arav means to mix, to interweave. These were people with no tribe, no lineage, no credentials, who saw what HaShem did to Egypt's gods and chose the exodus over the empire. They stood at the foot of the mountain when the Covenant was ratified. They became Bnei Yisra'el by walking into the agreement rather than by inheriting a place in it.

The tradition remembers them nervously. Numbers 11:4 blames the craving on the mixed crowd, and later readers made erev rav a byword for trouble smuggled in at the border. But the plain fact of Exodus stands: the founding generation of the Covenant included outsiders who joined by choice, and the Torah records it without apology. That fact has teeth. It means covenant membership was never a biological membership card, and it is why any office that installs a permanent gatekeeper between an ordinary person and the Covenant is arguing with the Covenant's own founding scene.
